Read our stories and be inspired by the many families that call our House, home

Our Story

My wife, April, took the test on the morning of October 8th, and it read “Pregnant.” We hadn’t been trying long and from the start, we’d hoped for a little girl. With a due date of June 6th, the pregnancy went beautifully for the first few months and we soon learned our wish had been granted – it’s a girl!

On Thursday morning, February 17th, April’s water broke. We immediately drove to our local hospital where April was admitted to labor and delivery. The hospital team administered medications to ease contractions and decided to transfer us to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco. We were told that before 24 weeks a baby’s “viability” is highly unlikely. Doctors prepared us for the worst. As we had barely passed the 24 week mark, our little girl still had a chance.

April remained in bed and on monitors for four days. Our baby girl, amazingly, was doing fine. I decided it would be best to go home so I could return to work and take care of a move we were planning. April and the baby were in good hands. Later that evening as I climbed in to bed, the phone rang. I answered quickly and was told by a nurse that April was undergoing an emergency C-Section. I asked if they were alright, but she had no information. I jumped in to my car and headed back to San Francisco. Welcome to the worst few hours of my life.

When I arrived, April was groggy, but otherwise fine. I walked through the door to the Infant Intensive Care Unit and there on the table was my beautiful, TINY baby girl. The doctors were cleaning her and prepping her for the incubator. A feeling of pride came over me that only a brand new parent can feel. There was my little girl, fighting with strength I would not have thought possible. Our little Abigail Grace Hoggatt was born on February 21st at 12:21 a.m., on her mommy’s birthday.

Five days later, April was released from the hospital and we had no idea where we would stay. We were only certain that we would not leave our daughter. Fortunately, a room was available at the Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco. They provided a comfortable place to stay, warm beds, homemade meals, a place to do laundry and a staff eager to satisfy our family’s every need. We found comfort and made friendships with other families who were in similar situations. During the first few weeks, we had some great days and some pretty scary days, but our little Abby Grace kept fighting for life and winning!

I can’t express how important the Ronald McDonald House is to families like ours. The cost of hotels, gas and food is particularly expensive in San Francisco and can be overwhelming when compiled with medical bills. Without the House, we would have been homeless or living in our car. The House is truly a respite for families of sick children.

After 101 days in the hospital receiving specialized care, Abby Grace was finally able to go home. We are forever grateful to the Ronald McDonald House for making us feel at home during our time of need, so we could be there for our daughter.
